Join us for a fun-filled afternoon at the Morrow County Dairy Farm Tour on July 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The farm tour will be at Berg Family Farm, 3100 Parsons Rd., Bellville. The family friendly event is free to attend and open to the public.
The tour will allow guests to see a working dairy farm and be up close and personal with the dairy cows. The highlight of the tour will be the milking parlor with robotic milkers which were recently installed and have enabled the family to efficiently milk cows and preserve the longevity of the family farm. Other stops will include feeds and nutrition, the pastures, free stall barn and the calf barn. Guests will learn about cow care and health, animal rations and rotational grazing, calf care and well-being, manure management, water quality and conservation practices. Guests will be able to enjoy the traditional rye and Swiss sandwich, cheese sticks, ice cream and milk.
The Berg Family Farm was started in 1969 with Walter and Regina Berg’s dream and now has three generations involved in the farm operation. Peter and Cathy Berg now oversee the farm with their sons, Collin and Aaron. Since the early 1990s, the Bergs have initiated many conservation practices that help ensure the land is in good shape for generations to come. Their conservation plan includes comprehensive nutrient management to address storm water runoff, additional contour strips, filter strips, grassed waterways and cover crops. They also have stabilized steep grades with riprap and installed an animal waste system. In addition, the Bergs are a leader in no-till farming and have used this practice for over 25 years.
The event is sponsored by the Morrow County Farm Bureau, Morrow County Dairy Association and OSU Extension – Morrow County. For more information, please visit the Morrow County Farm Bureau Facebook page.
