Wade Smith, owner and CEO, Whitehouse Specialty Crops, will provide information on the current trends in hydroponic and hot house growing. The event is hosted by the Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT) at the Agricultural Incubator Foundation (AIF).
Compared to traditional growing, hydroponics has many advantages. Hydroponics can be up to 90 percent more efficient in water usage as well a substantial production increase in the same amount of space. Indoor farming through a hot house (which uses supplemental heating in the winter) also allows growing in places and weather that otherwise would be unfavorable for traditional food production. These methods can help growers scale their production.
In addition to running his business, Smith was elected District 2 trustee for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation representing the interests of members in Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky and Wood counties. He is also a member of the Maumee Valley Growers Association.
Arrive early, as breakfast and informal networking will start at 8 a.m., with the program to follow. The cost is $10 per person in advance, or $12 per person at the door without RSVP (cash or check) which includes breakfast and networking opportunities.
