The Montgomery Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) has been offering high quality bare-root trees for decades. These trees, though small, often outpace larger transplanted trees within a few years. Because their roots are much less disturbed, they have very little transplant shock and take right off, adding beauty and value to your yard.
Traditionally, the trees have been offered in bundles of two, five, or 25, depending on the species. This year, some of the most popular native options will be offered for sale as single trees.
These trees were chosen for their reliability, beauty, and value to birds and pollinators. One or more trees from each category are offered as a single tree for preorder.
The county SWCD also offers Rain Barrels and Cover Crops for the garden as part of this sale. A Rain Barrel collects and stores some of the rain water from your roof for you to use later. This system hooks into your existing downspout and overflows back into it, protecting your foundation. Use the water to water for a garden or lawn, to wash the car, or add water to compost.
Cover Crops are planted for the benefits they provide to soil health, plant vitality, and pollinators such as butterflies and bees. These mixes contain untreated seeds and an inoculant that is OMRI approved for organic gardens. The mixes sold contain plants that will grow through the summer and/or fall, and then die in the cold of winter. When planting time comes in the spring, they can be planted right through the dead leaves and stems, which will act as a mulch for young garden plants. Cover crops are sold in ½ pound packets, which will cover 100 – 150 sq. ft.
This sale is a service provided to offer low cost plants for the conservation of our soil and water, and a source of food and cover for wildlife. Most trees are small and bare-root, and native to Ohio. Orders usually fit into one or two grocery bags. Anyone may purchase from this sale. To keep costs low, Montgomery SWCD cannot furnish replacements, or mail or deliver orders. Montgomery SWCD reserves the right to make substitutions if necessary.
