Cover crops are an incredibly vital link in a system of farming that protects and improves the health of our soil and water. The Montgomery SWCD has been working to promote and lead the way in the adoption of cover crops with our local farmers. The first visible evidence of that was the creation of a four-acre plot with a variety of cover crop blends planted at the “Sycamore Conservation Education Demonstration Farm” in 2014. This site continues to be a source of information about how cover crops do in our region’s soils.

Two regional experts will discuss the results of grid soil sampling on the Cover Crop Demo site and what cover crops can do for you. See examples of cover crops in action. Learn from Dr. Jim Hoorman, Soil Health Specialist at USDA-NRCS, about how cover crops fit into a farming system that promotes soil health, a diverse soil ecosystem and good economics. Philip Huffman of Huffman LLC, Cover Crop Seed Specialist, will present on what has worked in our area for local farmers, the lessons they have learned, and what they are trying next.

This free event is in partnership with ODA, Division of Soil & Water Conservation and the Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission through their 2017 Healthy Soils Mini-Grant Program.
