This year, in addition to researchers from The Ohio State University (OSU) showcasing their research, field night attendees will have the option to receive certification for Beef Quality Assurance (BQA). Field night participants will be able to view the research plots and attend sessions that qualify for BQA certification.

Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. and the program begins at 6 p.m. with BQA subject areas. Dr. Steve Boyles, Department of Animal Sciences, OSU, will introduce the BQA program in addition to discussing condition scoring for cull cows and best management practices for transporting livestock. Dr. Justin Kieffer, Department of Animal Sciences, OSU, will cover proper handling and administration of cattle medications, pain management, and biosecurity.

Forage management will be discussed by Dr. Ray Smith, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, University of Kentucky. He will identify summer grazing options for areas over-used by cattle during the winter months.

Pre-registration is required by Aug. 20 and there is a $10 per person fee. For more information about the field night, contact Scott Payne at [email protected] or call 740-286-3803.
