Central State University Extension will host a “Beginning Poultry Farming” class series from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday(s), March 17, 24 and 31. Pick one session, or attend all three. This information is for the second class in the series March 24.

March 17: Choosing the Best Chickens for Your Space

CSUE Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator Phil Hollingshead will share information on beginning poultry farming —meat and egg production, breeds to consider, housing and feeding.

March 24: Beginning Poultry Farming

CSUE Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator Denise Natoli Brooks will expand on choosing the best chicken breeds for your space. Information will be shared on breed options when building a small-scale flock — bird size, egg laying, egg color and size, meat quality, cold hardiness, coop needs, pasture suitability and behavior.

March 31: Processing Chickens

Andrea and John Hancock, owners of Happy Wife Acres, will present the basics of chicken processing. Information will be shared on when to process, psychology of processing, as well as the steps of dispatching, scalding, plucking, evisceration and preservation. Processing equipment will be shown and backyard chicken laws discussed. (No chickens will be processed during the class.)

The program is free for adults over the age of 18.
