Since opening its doors in February 2022 the Falcon Food Pantry has served more than 150 students per week, including more than 700 in November. A common misconception about food insecurity is that it does not impact college students. In fact, a recent research study at BGSU confirmed 42% of students experience food insecurity.

More than a food pantry, this initiative provides nutrition education sessions, wrap-around referral support services, internship opportunities for nutrition and public administration students, oversight of the BGSU Community Garden and even a mobile teaching kitchen to provide hands-on experiences across many cultures.

Speakers:

Dr. Jim Ciesla, dean, College of Health and Human Services

Dr. Shannon Orr, director, Falcon Food Pantry

An update on Ohio Community+Agriculture+Nutrition (Ohio CAN) program

The Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Association of Foodbanks have officially launched the Ohio Community+Agriculture+Nutrition (Ohio CAN) program. Ohio CAN is connecting producers with communities! Through this innovative program, historically underrepresented producers will be able to sell food to the Ohio Association of Foodbanks and the products will then be distributed through the 12 Feeding America foodbanks and 3,600 member charities across all 88 counties. Ohio CAN is building the resiliency of the state food supply chain and ensuring every farmer has an opportunity to feed Ohioans.

Speaker:

Carrie Hashbarger, director of Special Food Programs, Ohio Association of Foodbanks
