Adams County Farm Bureau hosts 2023 Annual Meeting

Adams County Farm Bureau and the Adams County Soil and Water Conservation District came together Aug. 15 for their annual meeting at the Red Barn Pavilion. The event was a delightful gathering, featuring a delicious meal provided by Hesler Catering. Attendees took the opportunity to reconnect and share in each other’s company before the official business meeting began.

The meeting welcomed various county office representatives, elected officials, and longstanding members, adding to the sense of community. The evening included a short business meeting, where members elected trustees and state annual meeting delegates, and voted on policy and code changes. Moreover, the event was a platform to recognize our volunteers and scholarship winners from the past year and to highlight the organization’s achievements.

Notably, Ty Higgins, Ohio Farm Bureau senior director of communications and media relations, served as the special guest speaker. He emphasized the significance of agriculture and the role of advocacy in ensuring lawmakers understand the impact of the farm bill on farmers. Higgins also provided insights into the various benefits offered by Farm Bureau, including health benefits, the Land is Your Legacy program, the energy program, Stone X, eminent domain successes, and initiatives related to meat processing and CAUV designation.

The evening concluded with a recap of the year’s highlights by Nathan Brown, District 20 trustee for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. With 75 attendees, the evening was marked by good fellowship among all those in attendance.

The issue of property taxation remains as one of the biggest challenges our members face today. Ensuring agricultural property is valued for its agricultural potential and not development is critical to the continued success of Ohio agriculture.

Giving farmers a voice
The plan we are on is great. It’s comparable to my previous job's plan, and we are a sole proprietor.

Finding farm labor
I appreciate the benefit of having a strong voice in my corner. The extras that are included in membership are wonderful, but I'm a member because of the positive impact to my local and state agricultural communities.

Strong communities
We work terrifically with the Ashtabula County Farm Bureau, hosting at least one to two outreach town hall events every year to educate new farmers and existing farmers on traditional CAUV and woodlands.

CAUV: Past, present and future
Because we are younger farmers just starting out, Farm Bureau has a lot of good opportunities and resources to help us grow in the future.

Farm Bureau involvement
Through the Select Partner program, we became educated in farm insurance and weren't just selling policies. It became more and more clear why farmers need an advocate like Ohio Farm Bureau.

So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
