The Van Wert County Farm Bureau wants to encourage members to get familiar with their board and members, so we are going to kick off some blogs by introducing our board president. The Van Wert County board president is Craig Pohlman and we asked him a few questions about agriculture and Farm Bureau to help our members get to know him a little better.

Q. What does agriculture mean to you?

A. It is a passion as much as a job. Helping to be a steward of resources God has provided to grow food is very rewarding.

Q. What influenced your career in agriculture?

A. Mostly my dad and growing up on our farm.

Q. What is your favorite part about being involved in the Farm Bureau?

A. Getting to see how important agriculture is to our state and country.

Q. What is your fondest memory from the Farm Bureau?

A. My first president’s trip to Washington, D.C. with Ohio Farm Bureau.

Q. What advice would you give to the next generation of agriculturalists?

A. Don’t be afraid to step up, say yes, and get involved. We are a minority and need all of the voices involved we can get.

Thank you for all your hard work for Farm Bureau, Craig!

My first recommendation in your journey is to start out with a local farming friend or mentor along with joining an organization like Ohio Farm Bureau.

New and beginning farmers
We’re just so thankful for the Farm Bureau and the foundation for helping put this together. And of course, the Boyert family for the vision they had with this grant. It’s jumping us forward 10 years. It’s unbelievable.

Bringing the farm back to life
It wasn’t until I joined the Wilmington College Collegiate Farm Bureau that I truly saw how my passion could translate into leadership, advocacy and a career.

Youth pathways in Farm Bureau
The issue of property taxation remains as one of the biggest challenges our members face today. Ensuring agricultural property is valued for its agricultural potential and not development is critical to the continued success of Ohio agriculture.

Giving farmers a voice
Through the Select Partner program, we became educated in farm insurance and weren't just selling policies. It became more and more clear why farmers need an advocate like Ohio Farm Bureau.

So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
