Annually the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation recognizes a volunteer leader in each county for his or her service and dedication to the organization. County Boards of Trustees are asked to select a person that has given time and effort to the organization to further the mission of Farm Bureau: “Working together for Ohio farmers to advance agriculture and strengthen our communities.”

Monroe County Farm Bureau has selected Steve Burkhart, Woodsfield, who will be recognized as one of the 86 county volunteers at this year’s Ohio Farm Bureau 100th annual meeting held in Columbus, Dec. 6-7.

Burkhart has served six years on the Board of Trustees, been an OFBF delegate, served as treasurer along with being on the county audit, budget, policy development, and membership committees. He has written numerous Core Funding applications for the county and helped with the annual “Pizza Comes from the Farm” for the fifth grades.

Steve and his wife, Diane, are the parents of Lieutenant Chadwick Burkhart who is active duty in the United States Army. They run a cow calf operation on their farm, which has been in the Burkhart Family since 1873, utilizing intensive grazing alongside rotational grazing. Burkhart enjoys welding and fabrication, rebuilding, and painting farm equipment. As a member of St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church he serves as a lector and is very involved with the Knights of Columbus.

To grow a network and gain perspective and knowledge in the industry through personal and professional development has been invaluable. Every day I learn and grow.

Farm Bureau connections
The issue of property taxation remains as one of the biggest challenges our members face today. Ensuring agricultural property is valued for its agricultural potential and not development is critical to the continued success of Ohio agriculture.

Bringing the farm back to life
Because we are younger farmers just starting out, Farm Bureau has a lot of good opportunities and resources to help us grow in the future.

Farm Bureau involvement
Through the Select Partner program, we became educated in farm insurance and weren't just selling policies. It became more and more clear why farmers need an advocate like Ohio Farm Bureau.

Select Partner Program
So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
