Read MoreIn response to a recent grain bin rescue in the Bellville community, Ohio Farm Bureau is sponsoring a grain rescue tube, auger and specialized training for the Jefferson Township Bellville Fire Department. The equipment and training will help ensure local first responders are better prepared to respond quickly and safely to grain entrapment emergencies.
This sponsorship is made possible through Nationwide’s Grain Bin Safety program in partnership with the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety. The effort coincides with Grain Bin Safety Week (Feb. 15-21), a national initiative Nationwide started in 2014 focused on raising awareness of grain bin hazards and expanding access to lifesaving rescue equipment and training for rural fire departments.
“A recent event in Bellville is a powerful reminder of how critical preparation and proper equipment are when seconds matter,” said Michael Bailey, senior vice president, operations and partnerships at Ohio Farm Bureau. “Grain Bin Safety Week is an opportunity to not only talk about prevention, but also to encourage communities to take action by nominating their local fire departments for this program.”
Ohio Farm Bureau encourages farmers, agribusinesses and community members to nominate their local fire departments for Nationwide’s Nominate Your Fire Department Contest through April 30. Selected departments will receive specialized grain rescue equipment and hands-on training designed to improve outcomes when grain entrapments occur. Since the program began, Nationwide and its partners have donated more than 450 rescue tubes and training across the country, contributing to 15 lives saved.
As part of Nationwide’s Grain Bin Safety program, farmers are also reminded to follow basic safety practices, including never entering a grain bin when grain is flowing, always using a spotter during bin entry, and locking out equipment to prevent accidental start-up. Awareness and preparation remain the most effective tools in preventing tragedies.
Through partnerships and proactive safety investments, Ohio Farm Bureau remains committed to strengthening emergency response and promoting farm safety across Ohio’s agricultural communities. For more information on how to nominate your fire department, visit ofb.ag/binsafety2026.
