The annual topic of health, safety and risk in farming is anchored in this issue by the biggest news of our year – the legislative approval to move forward with Ohio Farm Bureau Health Plans. We highlight the transition period before the plans go “live” with an in-depth story about the germination of the program at Tennessee Farm Bureau decades ago, alongside an interview with Director of Health Services Trevor Kirkpatrick and a FAQ for members who want more information. In September/October we also have very personal stories about ATV/UTV safety; the importance of safety on the farm following one member’s corn picker accident; supporting the physical and mental health of friends, family and strangers in rural communities; the imperative of having the right insurance coverage with a look back at the Comp Dairy fire a year later and much more.

My first recommendation in your journey is to start out with a local farming friend or mentor along with joining an organization like Ohio Farm Bureau.
We’re just so thankful for the Farm Bureau and the foundation for helping put this together. And of course, the Boyert family for the vision they had with this grant. It’s jumping us forward 10 years. It’s unbelievable.

The issue of property taxation remains as one of the biggest challenges our members face today. Ensuring agricultural property is valued for its agricultural potential and not development is critical to the continued success of Ohio agriculture.
Through the Select Partner program, we became educated in farm insurance and weren't just selling policies. It became more and more clear why farmers need an advocate like Ohio Farm Bureau.
