2024 Muskingum County Scholarship winners

The 2024 Muskingum County Farm Bureau and Boyer Insurance scholarship winners are Avery Vasko and Mason Prouty.  As part of the scholarship, Mason and Avery participated in a two-day adventure across parts of Muskingum County visiting different ag businesses.

On the first day, students visited McNutt Farm and watched their collies work sheep and cattle. Also on day one, students went to the German Farm Market and learned how it all started. The last two stops on day one were Windy Ridge Jerseys Dairy and McDonald’s Green House and Corn Maze.

On day two, Mason and Avery visited Boyer Insurance and learned about the agriculture of insurance. They also spoke with representatives from OSU Extension, Soil & Water Conservation District, and Natural Resource Conservation Service. In the afternoon the scholarship winners visited LinJus Farm and learned about their feedlot operation as well as their plans to have a mobile farm stand that should increase their direct-to-consumer sales. The last stop of the experience was Curly Girl Farm. Curly Girl Farm is a produce operation that also sells cut flowers and hosts you-pick flower events.

Avery and Mason shared their experience with the County Board of Trustees and received their scholarship at the June board meeting.

My first recommendation in your journey is to start out with a local farming friend or mentor along with joining an organization like Ohio Farm Bureau.

New and beginning farmers
We’re just so thankful for the Farm Bureau and the foundation for helping put this together. And of course, the Boyert family for the vision they had with this grant. It’s jumping us forward 10 years. It’s unbelievable.

It wasn’t until I joined the Wilmington College Collegiate Farm Bureau that I truly saw how my passion could translate into leadership, advocacy and a career.

Youth pathways in Farm Bureau
The issue of property taxation remains as one of the biggest challenges our members face today. Ensuring agricultural property is valued for its agricultural potential and not development is critical to the continued success of Ohio agriculture.

Giving farmers a voice
Through the Select Partner program, we became educated in farm insurance and weren't just selling policies. It became more and more clear why farmers need an advocate like Ohio Farm Bureau.

So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
