    Cost of Thanksgiving dinner declines

Ohio Farm Bureau Staff | Posted on

    November 20, 2025

    2025 Thanksgiving dinner cost

Cooking a Thanksgiving dinner for your friends and family will cost less than last year, marking the third straight year of price declines. The American Farm Bureau Federation’s 40th annual Thanksgiving dinner survey provides a snapshot of the average cost of Thanksgiving staples that make up a classic holiday feast for 10, which is $55.18 or about $5.52 per person in 2025.

This is a 5% decrease from 2024. Three years of declines don’t fully erase dramatic increases that led to a record-high cost of $64.05 in 2022.

Thanks to volunteer shoppers across the Buckeye State, AFBF has calculated that the average price for a classic holiday feast for 10 in Ohio will cost $55.87.

The shopping list for Farm Bureau’s informal survey included turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls, peas, cranberries, a veggie tray, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream, all in quantities sufficient for 10 servings.

Half of the ingredients in the survey declined in price, including dinner rolls and stuffing. Low wheat prices helped bring down the cost of items requiring flour.

    2025 Thanksgiving dinner cost comparison

    Ohio’s average prices:

    • 16-pound whole turkey: $23.34.
    • 16-ounce can of green peas: $1.73.
    • 30-ounce can of pumpkin pie mix: $3.99.
    • 12-ounce can of cranberries: $2.40.
    • Two 9-inch pie shells: $2.94.
    • One gallon of whole milk: $2.84.
    • Three pounds of sweet potatoes: $4.20.
    • 14-ounce box of cubed stuffing mix: $3.93.
    • Half-pint of whipping cream: $1.78.
    • Half-pound each of carrots and celery: $1.46.
    • 12 dinner rolls: $3.60.

This year’s national average cost was calculated using surveys completed with pricing data from all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Farm Bureau volunteer shoppers checked prices in person and online using grocery store apps and websites. They looked for the best possible prices without taking advantage of special promotional coupons or combined purchase deals.

The AFBF Thanksgiving dinner survey was first conducted in 1986. The informal survey provides a record of comparative holiday meal costs over the years. Farm Bureau’s classic survey menu has remained unchanged since 1986 to allow for consistent price comparisons.

    New and beginning farmers
My first recommendation in your journey is to start out with a local farming friend or mentor along with joining an organization like Ohio Farm Bureau.

    Growing Tomorrow Grant
We’re just so thankful for the Farm Bureau and the foundation for helping put this together. And of course, the Boyert family for the vision they had with this grant. It’s jumping us forward 10 years. It’s unbelievable.

    Giving farmers a voice
The issue of property taxation remains as one of the biggest challenges our members face today. Ensuring agricultural property is valued for its agricultural potential and not development is critical to the continued success of Ohio agriculture.

    Advocacy
So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
