Group Membership Spotlight: North Union Farmers Market

The Northeast Counties Farm Bureau serving Cuyahoga, Erie, Huron, and Lorain counties is excited to highlight one of our valued business members who plays an important role in supporting local agriculture and strengthening our rural communities. These spotlights are our way of recognizing the businesses that invest in Farm Bureau through Group Member sponsorships and help make a positive impact for agriculture across our communities.

This week’s Business Member Spotlight is…….

Located in Cuyahoga County, North Union Farmers Market was founded in 1995 by Donita Anderson. With her leadership, the nonprofit now supports more than 90 farmers and 100 local artisans each year for more than 30 years. The market works to strengthen regional agriculture, support small farm businesses, and build vibrant community gathering spaces centered around local food.

Operating multiple year-round farmers markets providing local farmers and food producers with direct-to-consumer sales opportunities, the markets feature locally grown fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy products, eggs, baked goods, honey, flowers, value-added foods, and handcrafted products from Ohio farmers and small businesses. In addition, North Union Farmers Market administers food access programs including SNAP/EBT, Produce Perks, WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program, and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition benefits to help make locally grown food more accessible to all members of the community.

The current market season features eight weekly market locations throughout northeast Ohio and two winter markets. North Union also hosts educational programming, live music, community events, and the annual Cleveland Garlic Festival, which is North Union Farmers Market’s largest fundraising event supporting local farms and food access initiatives.

New and beginning farmers
We’re just so thankful for the Farm Bureau and the foundation for helping put this together. And of course, the Boyert family for the vision they had with this grant. It’s jumping us forward 10 years. It’s unbelievable.

The issue of property taxation remains as one of the biggest challenges our members face today. Ensuring agricultural property is valued for its agricultural potential and not development is critical to the continued success of Ohio agriculture.

Giving farmers a voice
Through the Select Partner program, we became educated in farm insurance and weren't just selling policies. It became more and more clear why farmers need an advocate like Ohio Farm Bureau.

So many of the issues that OFBF and its members are advocating for are important to all Ohioans. I look at OFBF as an agricultural watchdog advocating for farmers and rural communities across Ohio.
